Lang'ata Member of Parliament Jalang'o has criticized men who expect their partners to contribute equally to financial responsibilities in a relationship, commonly referred to as "50/50."

In an interview with SPM Buzz, Jalang’o emphasized that men should provide for their partners and questioned why any man would ask a woman to contribute financially.

He expressed pride in never letting a woman pay for anything, even during times when he was struggling financially.

"Men must provide. Why are you dating a woman if you can't provide for her 100%? Why are you making your woman pay for anything?" he asked.

"Even when I was broke, I never let any woman pay for anything. That's stone-age, unpalatable, and primitive."

When asked about his "broke" financial state, Jalang’o humorously stated, "My broke M-Pesa balance is Fuliza at Sh200,000."

Jalang’o’s sentiments align with those of Bravin Yuri, who also called out men asking for 50/50 contributions, labeling them as "childish and controlling."

Kenyans online shared mixed reactions to the 50/50 debate.

Below are some opinions:

Njenga Kennedy: "A man must provide 100% to his family—that’s the pride of an African man."

Rehema Agano: "A man must provide, not necessarily everything, but most of it. A woman should be ready and able to lift her man when he’s down. It brings balance in the hierarchy of marriage."

Linda Makena: "I like the 50-50 bills personally because it goes hand in hand with 50-50 chores. If we’re two men in the house, we can also be two women."

Wambui Mwangi: "50-50 is okay, as long as y'all share the bills and house chores. But you men like 50-50 only on bills, while housework and raising children are left to one person. That’s not 50-50."

Fredrick Odiwuor: "This isn’t just about casual thinking. Yes, men are providers, but women are helpers. It shouldn’t be 50/50. Genesis 2:18—‘It is not suitable for a man to be alone. I will make him a suitable helper.’ The woman should help but not conditionally." The 50/50 debate continues to spark diverse views on gender roles, responsibilities, and the dynamics of modern relationships.
